Promoting Safety at the American River Festival

Promoting Safety at the American River Festival

Each year the American River Festival takes place on the South Fork of the American River located just outside of Caloma, Ca. There are many different events throughout the fest- stand up paddle board races, kayak races, games for kids, gear swaps, movie premiers, sponsors set up booths, and plenty more. This year there was also an amazing dinner, party and silent auction on Saturday night after all the events of the day went down.

Sierra Rescue and Rescue 3 International set up a booth to promote river safety through good education. People stopped by to get information on classes, tee-shirts, stickers and other safety info. Austin Nickell, instructor with Sierra Rescue, was manning the booth all weekend. Austin also competed in a the Kayak 8 Ball Race.  This consisted of 5 competitors and 5 or more 8 Ballers. The competitors raced from point A to point B, while the 8 ballers positioned themselves throughout the course to pop out spray decks, remove a drain plug, push competitors into an eddy, basically cause general mayhem for the racers. It was a very close race and if John Rogie, friend and Sierra Rescue Alum, had not been 8 balled right at the finish he would have certainly taken first. Tis the game however and Austin was able to sneak right by for the win.

Thanks so much to Julie Stanley for organizing the festival this year, and more thanks to all the volunteers, companies and people involved at the American River Festival. Make sure to come out next year!
