Well it would seem that the guides from Barker Ewing took the last of the warm spring-like weather and left us in the grips of winter for the swiftwater training with Sands. Day 1 was frigid. Snow and mid 30’s. We were fortunate enough to use Granite creek as our training site, and it just so happens that Granite hot springs wasn’t too far away. We were able to cycle folks through entrapment scenarios while others warmed up in the waterfall of hot water. Great for the students, but what about the instructor on the entrapment line? Even I eddied out a few times between drills.
Day two didn’t show much improvement save a few degrees, and rain as opposed to snow. This time however students opted to rent drysuits thanks to Rendezvous River Sports. We found great locations for the strainer swim drill and tension diagonal. Finished out the day and did final paperwork fireside at Cabin Creek Lodge. -ZB 5.28.12
